How to Know if Your SPE/PEM Cell Is Failing — 6 Signs

An end-of-life or faulty SPE/PEM cell does not suddenly shut down – it declines. 1. Step-by-step method — The 6 signs of failure

Sign n°1 — Repeated DPD test < 6,000 PPB

If 3 consecutive DPD tests (24 h apart) show pale pink or yellow instead of purple, your cell is producing less H₂. Possible causes: limescale (fixable), low battery (rechargeable), tired membrane (after-sales service).

Sign n°2 — 7 min cycle spontaneously interrupted

Blue LED turns off before the end of the cycle = thermal protection or cell undervoltage. If recurring after a full recharge: internal component. Mandatory after-sales service under warranty.

Sign n°3 — Visible bubbles diminished or absent

During a normal cycle, you should see a veil of micro-bubbles around the platinum electrode. If you no longer see anything: clogged electrode (descaling) or detached (after-sales service).

Sign n°4 — Persistent metallic or chemical odor

Beyond the first 3 break-in cycles, any metallic odor = electrode corrosion. A healthy cell produces water that is completely neutral in taste and odor. Odor = immediate after-sales service.

Sign n°5 — Abnormal heating of the base

Warm base at the end of the cycle = normal. Burning base > 50 °C or hot after 2 min = internal short circuit or faulty battery. Stop immediately, unplug, contact the workshop.

Sign n°6 — Collapsed battery life

If you charge every 2-3 cycles instead of 12-15: battery at end of life (normal at 800+ cycles) or cell consuming excessively (abnormal < 200 cycles). Free after-sales service under 5-year warranty.

2. Frequent errors

Error n°1 — Concluding "failure" without prior descaling. 60% of reported cases are due to limescale. Perform a gentle descaling (8° vinegar, 15 min) before any after-sales service.

Error n°2 — Disassembling the base to "check." IP67 seal lost, warranty voided. Any internal failure is diagnosed by DPD + LED. No need to open.

Error n°3 — Trying to repair with strong acidic products. Hydrochloric acid, drain cleaner = PEM membrane destruction in 30 sec. Only 8° white vinegar and food-grade citric acid are safe.
