Why male fertility is of interest to H2 research

Hypothetical Mechanism
Spermatozoa have a plasma membrane rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids—particularly vulnerable to peroxidation by •OH. H2 crosses the membrane by passive diffusion (low molecular weight, lipophilic), reaches the mitochondrion, and selectively neutralizes •OH without affecting the signaling ROS necessary for capacitation and the acrosome reaction. This mechanism is described in the literature as a research hypothesis; randomized clinical trials still need to be conducted. Results observed in studies or models—not a promise of individual results.
