Kawamura 2016 — VO₂max +3.5% in elite swimmers

Paul Fournier

— WEEKLY EDITION · FRIDAY 11 SEPTEMBER —

3.5% VO₂max: modest, but significant at the elite level.

Kawamura et al. (2016, Acta Physiologica) — 4-week protocol on 9 swimmers at Japanese national level, Tsukuba University. H₂-enriched water at 8,000 PPB, 1L/day, vs control group with still water.

Measurements: VO₂max on incremental treadmill to exhaustion, RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion, Borg 6-20 scale), peak blood lactate, heart-rate recovery.

Results at T+4 weeks: VO₂max +3.5% H₂ group (p=0.031), RPE −12% at equivalent power (p=0.018), faster HR recovery (−18 s to 50% baseline post-exercise).

Why 3.5% is significant at the elite level: in a national athlete, the aerobic ceiling is already very close to physiological maximum. Gaining 3.5% in 4 weeks without changing training is the equivalent of 6 months of classical periodisation.

Limit: n=9, short 4-week duration. Whether the effect holds across a long competitive season remains to be seen. Kawamura recommends a phase III RCT over 12 weeks of a full cycle.

9 Elite swimmers · +3.5% VO₂max · 4 wk Protocol

« Kawamura proves H₂ helps even athletes who have already 'optimised everything'. The potential lies in the marginal. »
