Ohsawa 2007 — the study that started it all

— WEEKLY EDITION · FRIDAY 28 AUGUST —
Before 2007, no one knew H₂ was antioxidant.
Ohsawa et al. (2007, Nature Medicine) — the founding study of the field. Hayashi Ohsawa and his team at Nippon Medical University (Tokyo) discover the selective antioxidant effect of molecular H₂.
Methodology: rat model of cerebral ischaemia-reperfusion (stroke mimicry). Inhalation of 2% H₂ for 60 min post-ischaemia. Oxidative stress measurements (8-OHdG, 4-HNE) + infarct size by MRI at 24h.
Founding result: H₂ selectively reduces the most toxic free radicals (•OH hydroxyl, ONOO⁻ peroxynitrite) but spares those useful for cell signalling (•O₂⁻ superoxide, H₂O₂ peroxide, •NO nitric oxide). This selectivity is what makes H₂ a unique antioxidant.
Consequence for science: 320+ studies published between 2007 and 2026 on H₂ and 166 pathological conditions. Ohsawa is cited in over 80% of published H₂ papers. He is our Newton.
2007 Founding year · 320+ Studies since · 80% Ohsawa citations
