Aoki et al. (2012, Medical Gas Research) — randomised double-blind study on 10 professional football athletes from the University of Tsukuba (Japan).
Protocol: 1L of hydrogen-enriched water at 1,200 PPB consumed 1 hour before a maximal cycle ergometer test. Control group: still water identical in appearance. Blood lactate and pH measurements at T+0, +5, +10, +15 min post-exercise.
Results: the H₂ group showed −39% peak blood lactate vs the placebo group (p=0.016), blood pH +0.07 units at T+5 min (signal of better acid buffering). No effect on VO₂max or peak power — H₂ acts on RECOVERY, not raw performance.
Aoki's limits: n=10 (small sample), dose 1,200 PPB far below the 9,000 PPB target. Suggests the effect is dose-dependent — at 9,000 PPB a stronger response is expected.
