H2 and CrossFit / HIIT: recovery between WODs

CrossFit, HYROX, HIIT cycle or rowing intervals: these high-intensity training modalities produce a massive acute oxidative stress, lactate accumulation, an elevation of creatine kinase and a post-effort CRP peak. For athletes who string several WODs per week, recovery quality between sessions determines long-term progression — far more than the punctual intensity of an isolated session.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) fits the category of selective recovery tools: it neutralises the oxidative species most deleterious to muscle (peroxynitrite, hydroxyl radical) without blunting the signalling species useful for adaptation (physiological H2O2, NO). This selectivity, identified by Ohsawa (2007), is the basis for the Aoki 2012 study on elite footballers from Tsukuba University which remains the reference in the sport field.

Mechanism: H2 selectivity in HIIT context

HIIT and CrossFit produce three key biological signals to manage in recovery.

Blood lactate. Concentration 8-15 mmol/L after an intense WOD (vs 1-2 mmol/L at rest). Lactate is not a waste product to be eliminated as a priority — it serves as energy substrate recycled via hepatic gluconeogenesis (Cori cycle) and direct consumption by slow-twitch muscle fibres. Return-to-baseline kinetics are 30-90 minutes depending on metabolic profile.

Creatine kinase (CK). Marker of muscle lysis. Typical elevation 200-600 IU/L after a heavy WOD (vs 50-200 at rest). Peak at 24-48h post-effort. A persistent high CK between sessions signals incomplete recovery and a risk of cumulative injury.

High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP). Marker of systemic inflammation. Elevation of 30-70% within 24-48h post-intense effort, return to baseline in 72h. A chronic high hs-CRP between cycles is a warning signal on total training dose.

The Aoki et al. (2012) study, conducted at Tsukuba University on 10 elite footballers, showed that acute H2 supplementation (2 litres of hydrogen water the day before and the morning before an intermittent Bangsbo-type protocol) reduces the drop in muscle function measured by isokinetic torque by about 39% vs placebo. Post-effort blood lactate is also significantly lower in the H2 group. The anti-fatigue effect is measurable at effort, not only subjectively.

Mechanistic logic: H2 diffuses quickly into muscle fibres, selectively neutralises •OH and ONOO massively produced at intense effort, without touching H2O2 which serves as an adaptation signal for MnSOD expression and mitochondrial biogenesis. This selectivity is what distinguishes H2 from high-dose antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E) which have been suspected of blunting certain adaptations in athletes (effect described by Ristow et al.).

Concrete protocol: 750 mL pre-WOD + 750 mL post-WOD

The protocol below is synthesised from observations Aoki (2012) and the practice of CrossFit and HYROX athletes using HYDROGENYX. It is deliberately simple to fit into an already busy routine.

Pre-WOD phase (60 minutes before). 750 mL of ELITE 9K water, 7-minute cycle, slow ingestion over 10-15 minutes. The goal is to raise tissue H2 concentration before the effort, in order to have a neutralising reserve at the moment of oxidative peak. The 60-minute window also leaves time for partial gastric emptying to avoid discomfort during effort.

Intra-WOD phase. Normal hydration with plain water. No need to generate a new cycle during the effort itself.

Post-WOD phase (15-30 minutes after). 750 mL of ELITE 9K water, 7-minute cycle, ingestion over 10-15 minutes. This is the window where post-effort oxidative stress peaks and where selective neutralisation brings the most value. Combine with usual recovery strategy (whey or plant protein, post-effort carbs, electrolytes according to sweat loss).

Post-WOD evening phase. An additional 750 mL glass at bedtime if the session was particularly heavy or if you have a WOD the next morning. This usage echoes the sleep protocol described in our other articles: better N3 deep sleep, better recovery.

Limits and contraindications

The Aoki (2012) study is the sport reference but remains limited: 10 elite footballers, acute protocol, acute measurements. Evidence on chronic use in amateur athletes is essentially extrapolated and supported by user observations.

The potential anti-blunting effect signalled with vitamin C/E does not seem to apply to H2 in the available data, owing to molecular selectivity. But this absence of a negative signal does not equal absence of effect on very long training cycles.

Precautions. An additional water volume of 1.5 L per day around WODs adds to your normal hydration. For practitioners with a high baseline hydric volume (>3 L/day), monitor sodium if abundant sweat loss (add electrolytes like LMNT, Skratch or homemade).

Audience not recommended. No documented absolute contraindication to hydrogen water consumption. For athletes under medical supervision (heart conditions, chronic treatment), validate integration with the sports physician or treating physician.
