H2 and skin quality — what the Ohta 2024 study actually showed
Paul Fournier
Why discuss cellulite and skin in a scientific journal?
Because the questions arise. And because, since 2024, science has solid data on the action of molecular hydrogen at the dermal level. But first and foremost: cellulite is not a pathology. It is a physiological characteristic of the skin, present in about 85 to 95% of women after puberty, regardless of weight or athletic activity. The purpose of this article is neither to pathologize it nor to promise its disappearance.
The real subject of interest to us lies elsewhere: low-grade chronic inflammation of subcutaneous adipose tissue, dermal oxidative stress, and how H₂ — a selective antioxidant molecule — interacts with these two parameters, documented since the Kato 2012 study (Photochemistry and Photobiology) up to Ohta 2024, the most recent reference.
Ohta 2024 — the UV study that changed everything
Professor Shigeo Ohta's team — the same team that published the foundational Nature Medicine 2007 study — assembled a Tokyo dermatological consortium to evaluate the effect of dissolved molecular hydrogen on human skin biopsies exposed to UV-A and UV-B under controlled conditions.
Three main measurements:
| Measured Parameter | UV Control | UV + H₂ 1.2 ppm | Variation |
|---|---|---|---|
| MMP-1 (collagenase) | +340 % | +148 % | −56 % |
| 8-OHdG (DNA damage) | +428 % | +178 % | −58 % |
| Dermal IL-6 | +212 % | +94 % | −56 % |
| Type I Collagen (retention) | −38 % | −16 % | +22 pts |
Honest reading: these are ex vivo data on biopsies, not clinical results on double-blind volunteers. The transposition to chronic oral consumption in real life remains to be demonstrated. But the mechanism is robust and reproducible.
Dermal oxidative stress: the weak link that age attacks
Skin is the largest organ in the body. It is also the one that is first exposed to UV, atmospheric pollution, and passive smoking. Three major aggressors that share a common mechanism: the generation of free radicals, particularly the hydroxyl radical (OH•), the most toxic to cellular DNA.
Before the age of 30, endogenous antioxidant defenses (reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase) effectively neutralize these radicals. After 30-35 years, their production gradually decreases — this is what is called low-grade chronic oxidation.
Cumulative consequences:
- Accelerated degradation of type I and III collagen (loss of firmness)
- Glycation of elastic fibers (loss of bounce)
- Chronic inflammation of subcutaneous adipose tissue (dimpled appearance)
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Slowed tissue repair
Cellulite: what we really know about the mechanism
Cellulite — dermatological term oedemato-fibro-sclerotic panniculopathy — combines three physiopathological phenomena:
- Localized adipocyte hypertrophy (fat cells that grow in size)
- Interstitial edema related to micro-local water retention
- Fibrosis of connective septa separating fat lobules, giving the dimpled appearance
Low-grade inflammatory factors play a role at all three stages. It is here that the selective antioxidation of H₂ could — in theory, based on available studies — provide a benefit. No clinical study has measured the clinical evolution of cellulite under a chronic oral H₂ protocol to date.
Any brand that promised "less cellulite with hydrogen water" would be going beyond the scope of current science. We do not do that.
What our customers report (testimonials, not studies)
"After 8 weeks of a 2 × 500 mL/day protocol, I saw no difference in the cellulite on my thighs. However, the skin on my face is denser, and my hands and décolleté have fewer fine lines. That's what I kept."
— Marina B., 44 years old, Lyon (verified)
"I took it for my joints. Bonus effect: my skin shows less marks in the morning, I have less swelling under my eyes. My beautician told me before I thought to mention it."
— Catherine D., 52 years old, Bordeaux (verified)
These are individual testimonials. They do not constitute clinical proof. They are published here because they reflect what we regularly read in after-sales feedback — without extrapolation.
What actually works for dermal quality (reminder)
Some reminders that you probably already know, but which rigor requires us to include:
| Factor | Level of Evidence | Expected Dermal Impact |
|---|---|---|
| SPF 50 Sun Protection | Very High | Major (anti-photoaging) |
| 7-8 h/night Sleep | High | Major (nightly repair) |
| Smoking Cessation | Very High | Major |
| Oral Hydration 1.5-2 L/day | High | Moderate |
| Topical Retinoids (prescription) | High | Moderate to High |
| H₂ Water 9,000 PPB | Moderate (Ohta 2024 ex vivo) | To be clinically demonstrated |
H₂ does not replace any of the above. In a global "skin lifestyle" approach, it can be included as a selective systemic antioxidant supplement — subject to future data.
Observational protocol (for informational purposes)
Based on available literature and verified customer feedback from 1,988 reviews, here's what we suggest for informational purposes only:
- Dose: 2 × 500 mL/day at 9,000 PPB DPD-validated (morning on an empty stomach + mid-afternoon)
- Minimum evaluation period: 8 weeks
- Observable parameters: perceived skin density, pillow marks, morning puffiness, post-sun exposure repair
- Do not discontinue: sun protection, sleep, basic hydration
