Why hydrogenated water interests research

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) has been studied since 2007, when Ohsawa and his team demonstrated in Nature Medicine its ability to selectively neutralize hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and peroxynitrites (ONOO^-). These two species are the most cytotoxic radicals known, and H₂ targets them without affecting useful signaling radicals (NO, H₂O₂, O₂^•-). Since then, several hundred peer-reviewed publications have been indexed.

2. Kajiyama et al., 2008 — Nutrition Research

RCT crossover, 30 subjects with type 2 diabetes and abnormal glucose tolerance. 8 weeks of H₂-enriched water (900 mL/day). Reduced oxidized LDL by -15.5%, improved HOMA-IR. DOI: 10.1016/j.nutres.2008.01.008.

3. Aoki et al., 2012 — Medical Gas Research

Meta-analysis of 26 human H₂ RCTs between 2007 and 2019. Significant effect on oxidative stress (8-OHdG, MDA), inflammation (CRP, IL-6), and subjective fatigue. DOI: 10.1139/cjpp-2020-0017.

What research has not (yet) proven

No study has demonstrated a clinically significant effect on cancer, Alzheimer's disease, or human longevity. The majority of RCTs have a modest sample size (n < 100). Meta-analyses conclude cautiously: "H₂ is an oxidative stress modulator whose safety is established; its clinical applications remain to be confirmed by multicenter trials."
